older

one of the most interesting things about getting older is how it changes your perception of time. on one hand, everything after my late 20s seems to fly. Years are flying by like seasons. That part is less interesting and more intimidating, although it does give you a certain resilience buff because even the hard times go by faster now.

what's really more interesting is how it still feels like everything just got started, even things that sometimes feel so far in the past of my life kinda feel like yesterday at the same time, and having perceived how short life seems at times, it really puts into perspective how not-that-long-ago most of history was. When I was a kid in the 90s, the 1970s sounded ancient to me. In the 2000s, the 1950s seemed ancient to me. In the 2010s, I realized the 90s were already 20 years ago, and the 1970s were only 20 years before that, and the 1950s 20 years before that. And now in the second half of the 2020s - a decade that seems to be going by in the blink of an eye - I'm now beginning to sense how close together so much of history really is, and that is fascinating to me.

I think about this once in a while, and yesterday I began thinking about it again because I was watching footage of an interview conducted in 1929, 97 friggin years ago there were men in front of cameras and their appearance and voices were being recorded. These were two men in their 80s and 90s, and they were survivors of the U.S. CIVIL WAR.

An interesting pattern on my dad's side of the family, which might continue forward with me if I ever have kids, is that we're having kids later. My dad's dad was in his 50s when my dad was born, and my dad was 42 when I was born. I never met my grandpa because he was born in the 1890s. His grandpa could've been born in the 1700s for all I know. Just a handful of generations can stretch back centuries, and heck, 0 A.D. was only about 25 lifetimes ago if we're dividing 2025 years by 80 years.

idk man it's getting all sorts of funky up here in my perceptual faculties of time and I just needed to get that out. enjoy your time!
